Scapa Flow is a natural anchorage in Orkney, Scotland, that contains the wrecks of three German battleships of the High Seas Fleet scuttled on 21 June 1919. The vessels—SMS König, SMS Kronprinz Wilhelm, and SMS Markgraf—were interned in the Flow following the armistice of November 1918 and were deliberately sunk by their German crews as the peace negotiations concluded. These wrecks remain substantial underwater archaeological features lying on the seabed of the Flow, significant as material evidence of the final act of the German Imperial Navy in the First World War. The site holds considerable historical importance as both a war grave and a record of early twentieth-century naval technology and maritime conflict.
