The Battle

History & Significance

County Durham remained strongly Catholic after the Northern Rising of 1569. The Prince Bishop's traditional authority made consistent enforcement difficult. The government used pursuivants backed by soldiers to raid Catholic gentry houses around Bishop Auckland and the Wear valley. The raids disrupted the networks of priests who had survived the Northern Rising suppressions.

Forces Involved

Royal pursuivants with armed escort; loyal Protestant gentry
