History & Significance

The Raid of Redeswire in July 1575 — when a warden day meeting between Scottish and English march officials erupted into a battle that killed the English warden Sir John Forster's son and briefly captured Forster himself — created a diplomatic crisis between Scotland and England. The Scottish regent Morton scrambled to make amends. The aftermath involved arresting the Scottish participants, releasing English prisoners, and paying compensation. The Redeswire affair showed how quickly border diplomacy could collapse into violence and how carefully the regency had to manage Anglo-Scottish relations.
