The Battle

History & Significance

When Mary Queen of Scots married Darnley in 1565 without the approval of the Protestant lords, her half-brother Moray led a rebellion. Mary's response was vigorous — she put on armour, assembled an army, and chased Moray across Lowland Scotland in what became known as the Chaseabout Raid. Moray refused to fight and eventually fled to England. Mary's decisive action showed her at her most capable as a ruler. Elizabeth I received Moray coldly and sent him back to Scotland.
