History & Significance

Jedburgh's Augustinian abbey had already been badly damaged by previous English raids but Hertford's forces completed its destruction. The town was burned and the remaining structures demolished. Jedburgh was particularly significant as an ecclesiastical centre and as the traditional starting point for Scottish royal entries into the Borders. Its destruction symbolised the assault on Scottish institutions that the Rough Wooing represented.
