Following the occupation of Edinburgh after Dunbar, Cromwellian forces constructed a major citadel fort at Leith to serve as the main garrison and naval base for the occupation of Scotland. The Leith citadel was a massive earthwork construction typical of the period and housed a permanent English garrison. It became the administrative and military headquarters for the Cromwellian government of Scotland.
The size of the opposing forces is not recorded in the surviving sources.
