The Battle

History & Significance

Walter Scott of Buccleuch was arrested and held in Edinburgh Castle in 1597 as part of the diplomatic fallout from the Kinmont Willie rescue from Carlisle the previous year. Elizabeth I had demanded Buccleuch's surrender to English justice; James VI compromised by imprisoning him in Scotland. Buccleuch was held for some months before eventually being released. His detention in Edinburgh was accompanied by considerable military tension — Buccleuch's Border affinity remained armed and potentially volatile. The episode illustrated how Border incidents could create genuine interstate crises between Scotland and England.
