Overview

History & significance

Corrieyairack Pass is a military road constructed in the 1730s as part of the strategic network of Highland routes built under the direction of General George Wade following the 1715 Jacobite Rising. The road traverses challenging terrain between Allt Lagan a'Bhainne and Black Burn in Inverness-shire, ascending to approximately 635 metres at the pass itself, and remains one of the most dramatic examples of early eighteenth-century military engineering in the Scottish Highlands. The route features the characteristic stone construction typical of Wade's roads, engineered to facilitate rapid troop movement and improve government control over the region. The pass subsequently featured in the 1746 campaign during the final Jacobite Rising, when Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces occupied the road before the Battle of Culloden.
