Overview

History & significance

Corrieyairack Pass is a military road constructed in the 1730s as part of the British government's infrastructure programme to pacify the Scottish Highlands following the 1715 Jacobite rising. The road was engineered by Major William Caulfeild under the direction of General George Wade, forming a crucial link across the high watershed between Inverness-shire and the southern Highlands. The route climbs to approximately 840 metres at its highest point, crossing difficult terrain with a series of tight zigzag turns that remain distinctive features of the surviving structure. The road represents an important example of military engineering from the early eighteenth century and retains much of its original paved surface, making it a significant physical record of Hanoverian military strategy in the Highlands.
