299 sites — individual pages for each
The Roman military presence in Britain left a dense network of forts stretching from the Saxon Shore in the south to the Antonine Wall in Scotland. Auxiliary forts garrisoned units of 500 or 1,000 soldiers drawn from across the Empire, while legionary fortresses housed the full strength of a Roman legion — some 5,000 men. Many of Britain's modern towns grew from the civilian settlements that developed outside fort walls.
All 299 fort sites recorded in Britain are listed below, each with its own dedicated page covering historical context, significance, nearby Roman sites, scheduled monuments and Domesday Book cross-references.
